Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz set fourth and fifth fastest times in qualifying for the British Grand Prix. Commenting on the results of the session, the Ferrari drivers commented that they were surprised by the McLaren’s speed.
Charles Leclerc (4th): “The first and second part of qualifying went quite well considering the serious problems I had in the previous stages, which took place in similarly changeable weather conditions. It looks like the hard work I’ve put in over the past few weeks has paid off, which is great.
In the final I didn’t manage to do a lap as well as I wanted to – I came out wider than I needed to from turn 15 onwards. There was no water, but the asphalt turned out to be wet and that was enough to lose some grip on the track. Probably due to lost time I didn’t manage to get a front row spot, but it’s great to see the McLaren drivers up front. There is a very close battle between us, so tomorrow will be an exciting day.
It is a pity that I did not collect data on the performance of the car on a long series of circles due to the fact that I missed the second training session. There is nothing that can be done, but the team and I did our best to minimize the impact of Friday’s problem. We are in good shape, so anything is possible tomorrow.”
Carlo Sainz (5th): “In terms of pace and my feeling for the car, the result isn’t too bad, although the appearance of two McLaren drivers at the front was unexpected. Today they are very fast, but the result is more or less in line with expectations, as such conditions are not very suitable for us.
This year we’ve already had a difficult qualifying in similar conditions befitting McLaren – their final laps were great, but their result may be due to track characteristics.
I would like to repeat my result from last year at Silverstone, but we are seven tenths slower than Red Bull, so if nothing happens it will be difficult to repeat my result. Better focus on tomorrow McLaren ahead of his on the podium.
We can’t forget about Mercedes because on Friday they were faster than us in a long series of circles. Tomorrow we will overtake McLaren, the Mercedes drivers will overtake McLaren and us – it will be an exciting race.”
