Max Verstappen: I didn’t attack 100% in qualifying

Max Verstappen set the fastest time in qualifying for the British Grand Prix to take his fifth pole in a row, seventh of the season and 27th of his career. The Red Bull Racing driver said he did not squeeze the maximum out of the car during the session, because he did not want to risk a crash on a drying track.

His teammate Sergio Perez qualified outside the top ten for the fifth race in a row. The Mexican driver confused his sixteenth time with problems with his car on a drying track.

Max Verstappen (1st): “Qualifying turned out to be quite crazy! The session proved to be hectic with some parts of the track remaining wet. I did my laps and in the final of qualifying I was quite surprised to see the McLaren drivers next to me, but it’s great that they qualified so high. I am also happy that we managed to get the pole position.

In the first and second part of qualifying there were wet areas on the track, so caution was advised. I attacked almost to the limit, but when I realized I had the fastest car at my disposal, I didn’t have to attack 100%.

As a result, we were a bit behind in the final, but I was able to bounce back. Nice qualifying, but I’m already looking forward to Sunday.”

Sergio Perez (16th): “The red flags lasted longer than we originally thought – unfortunately I had to wait longer than planned for the session to resume, and then I was unable to properly warm up the tyres.

I’ve had problems with the car in similar circumstances in the past. This weather only exacerbates the problems I have with the car. The team and I need to understand the reasons and find a solution. I hope we succeed.

Hopefully it will stay dry on Sunday. We had a good pace on Friday and I hope he comes back to me tomorrow.
