In Canada, the Red Bull Racing team recorded a sixth straight win, but only Max Verstappen reached the finish of the Canadian Grand Prix, defending first position in a very sharp duel with Carlos Sainz in the closing stages of the race.
Red Bull’s motorsport adviser couldn’t help but notice the excellent pace the Ferrari cars were able to achieve in Montreal. Marco also explained why Sergio Perez retired on lap 8.
“Towards the end of the race Sainz was able to create enormous pressure. Max could not leave Carlos, because he could not use the DRS system, according to Marco in the broadcast of the Austrian TV channel ORF. – On the second sector of the track, the Ferrari car was much faster than ours.
Of course, the fact that Verstappen was driving on older tires than Sainz also played a role. But I have to say that Max did a great job withstanding this pressure, for which he deserves all the credit.
We were also lucky that Sainz made two mistakes when braking for the hairpin. But even under pressure Max drove flawlessly, we didn’t notice a single miss. Incidentally, his task was also complicated by the fact that his radio was out of order, and we didn’t know if Verstappen had heard the team’s instruction that the high power mode could be used for defence.
But since the radio didn’t work, the good news is that at least we didn’t hear him complain!
Speaking of Perez, his car’s gearbox broke down. Her resource was running out, but she had to endure this race. However, it could also somehow be related to the aftermath of Saturday’s accident.
Overall, it has to be admitted that Ferrari was able to set a faster pace in the race than we expected. Our RB18 is still too heavy and that takes its toll. But if we manage to make the car a bit lighter, we can immediately add a lot to that.”
