Guido van der Garde sympathizes with Nick de Vries

After ten rounds of the season, Nick de Vries has joined quite a long list of riders who have been fired from Toro Rosso/AplhaTauri over the years – today rumors have been confirmed that Daniel Ricciardo will replace him. Already in Hungary on AT04 number 21, under which the Dutchman performed, is replaced by the well-known “troika”.

One of the first to react sympathetically to the news was Guido van der Garde, a former driver who once stayed a bit longer in Formula 1 – in 2013 he spent a full season with Caterham. However, it seems that he got into endurance racing after that, where he performs quite well.

“I never expected that everything would end so quickly for Nick,” Guido writes on social networks. “If you think about it, in my opinion he wasn’t given enough time to adapt to the car, to make progress (and he was progressing, albeit slowly but surely).”

The commentary ends with a short but expressive sentence, which cannot be translated into Russian by ethical standards, but the approximate meaning is that Van der Garde is concerned about his compatriot, who is now very offended.

They ended up with Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri, but from Helmut Marko’s point of view, they didn’t deserve the right to move to Red Bull Racing, or they even resigned in the middle of the season Sebastien Bourdais, Scott Speed, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Jean-Eric Vergne, Jaime Alguersuari, Brandon Hartley and now Nick de Vries.

A special case is Carlos Sainz, who moved from Toro Rosso to Renault, and Daniil Kvyat, who left Toro Rosso several times in different situations, but returned – even after missing the 2018 season. In 2021, the Russian driver was a reservist at Renault , after which he said goodbye to Formula 1 for good.

You may remember Sebastien Buemi, but the Swiss, although he did not drive for Red Bull Racing, was listed as third driver for a long time, winning races and titles in the WEC and Formula E in the meantime.
