On Sunday, Valtteri Bottas was pleased to receive two gifts – during the race it was a safety car on the track and after the finish – the Canadian Grand Prix stewards’ decision to fine Fernando Alonso for incorrect defense methods, forcing Finnish driver Alfa Romeo goes up another lineup.
“The stewards really had no choice but to punish Alonso. He drove in front of me in his Alpine car and changed the route five times, although everyone knows this is only allowed once, Valtteri noted. – Overall the race was not bad, all things considered. It’s nice that we both – me and Guanyu Zhou – earned points. After such a weekend, the partner naturally gains more confidence in his abilities.
I have no doubts that in the coming races we will be about the same level and earn more points together.”
On lap 49 of the race, an unexpected incident occurred that largely changed the course of events: Yuki Tsunoda, returning to the pit lane track, made a student error and his car crashed into a guard rail. To evacuate AlphaTauri from the side of the road, the race directors decided to put a safety car on the track. This allowed Bottas to make a single pit stop and get a new set of tires with minimal loss of time.
“It felt like for the first time in my life a safety car stopped at the right time,” Valtteri said with a smile to Viaplay. “It was a lot of fun and helped me a lot. But our pace was fast enough and allowed to fight with Alpine. The car seems to be as fast as it was at the start of the season. It’s nice, but now it should be like this in all races.
It may be added that the celebration of the successful conclusion of the Canadian weekend for Alfa Romeo’s main race engineer ended in water proceedings: tough Pujolar had to swim in the St. Lawrence River.
Pujolar has placed a bet with Frederic Vasseur that if one of the team’s riders makes it to seventh place, he will swim across the river. Vasser apparently put him in 3rd place to minimize the risk of such swimming. As a result, Pujolar really jumped from the pier into the water in front of everyone. The team also tried to throw Guanyu Zhou into the water, but he didn’t give up.
