Filming on Formula 1 started last week at Silverstone and we talked about it, also mentioning that there is no detailed information yet about Hollywood director Joseph Kosinski’s new work.
But gradually more and more information appears, which is not surprising, because the interest in the future picture is very high, and not only in the motorsport community, since very serious forces are involved in the production of the film. There’s probably no doubt that Lewis Hamilton, whose production company Dawn Apollo Films is running this project, will try to avoid “branching cranberries” – at least in terms of being directly related to the racing theme.
Anyone who took a close look at how the landscape at Silverstone was organized – the pits of the fictional APX GP team and what their cars looked like – commented that everything had been done with genuine attention to the smallest detail. If Mercedes specialists were involved in adapting the Formula 2 car for the filming process, then Rodin Carlin, Trevor Carlin’s team, provided assistance in creating a realistic racing environment.
It is rumored that the film will be called “Apex” – in fact, this is the name of the team for which, according to the plot, the veteran of motorsport Sonny Hayes, the hero of Brad Pitt, plays.
This is what the movie actor himself said about the filming process on Sky Sports: “I get a lot of fun, we all have a lot of fun and I feel like this is one of the best periods in my life! Everything was great at Silverstone, we got into this incredible atmosphere and it’s just great to be a part of everything that’s happening and tell our story.
We received a very warm welcome, all teams opened their doors, we were treated very well in the FIA and in Formula 1, Mohammed bin Sulayem and Stefano Domenicali helped us very actively. In general, everything is going well.
I play a guy who was racing in the 90s, then had a terrible accident, somehow got out, then disappeared for a while, then competed in other categories. And then he was approached by his friend, played by Javier Bardem, now the owner of the team in last place, his cars always finish 21st and 22nd.
But this team has a talented young racer Joshua Pearce, played by Demson Idris, and they turn to me, as if clinging to straws – that’s where the fun begins!
I’ll tell you what I really like: the whole car is hanging with cameras! But from the side, you never feel the speed or the overload experienced by the rider. In general, this is all very, very interesting!
I’ve never driven a race car before, but I’ve done a lot of motorcycle racing over the last 20 years and that helped me a lot. Sure, I flew off the track a few times, but the whole filming process really gets me excited. I’m not really nervous, the guys prepared me well, in some corners I even got a look at the grandstands, and on the straights I had time to look around. But of course I mainly focus on trajectories…
In general, everything should be as authentic as possible. Lewis wants us to respect his favorite sport and try to show what Formula 1 really is.”
In addition, Brad Pitt turned to Martin Brundle, now a popular TV commentator, who conducted this interview, with an offer to participate in the filming process in the role of … Martin Brundle. The former rider reacted cheerfully and said he would like to participate in the project.
No release date has been given at this stage in the film’s production, but some sources close to Hollywood are citing late 2024 or early 2025. And while the rights to the image belong to Apple Studios, it will hit theaters first. and only then will it be available on the Apple TV+ streaming service.
