Super Formula: Lawson set the 2nd fastest time in qualifying

Liam Lawson, a Red Bull junior driver, will be driving a season in the Japanese Super Formula Series this year and is generally up to the task. Four stages before the end of the championship, he takes 2nd place in the individual standings – the 21-year-old New Zealander has already won two victories.

Round 6 of the season takes place this weekend at Fuji Speedway, qualifying today and Team Mugen’s Lawson set a 2nd fastest time, less than two tenths behind the pole holder.

The Japanese Tadasuke Makino won the qualifying – he takes 7th place in the individual standings, and Liam was confidently ahead of him in four of the five races already run, so we can assume that tomorrow he will try to repeat what he has already done several times.

Lawson has something to fight for: he is just 10 points behind series leader Rytom Miata, with plenty of races to go, and his arch-rival for the title will start from 5th on Sunday. On the other hand, Liam has a real chance of getting into Formula 1, as he, and not Daniel Ricciardo, who until recently was considered the main contender for a place in AlphaTauri, left after the dismissal of Nick de Freeze.

If Lawson wins the Super Formula title and Ricciardo fails to show impressive results in the AT04 car, Red Bull could very well become Liam Yuki Tsunoda’s next teammate. However, this is a matter of some future and in general only one of the possible event development scenarios. But one thing is clear, Lawson has confirmed again this year that he is a very fast rider.
