Super formula: Lawson wins Fuji again

Liam Lawson, a Red Bull junior driver, took another victory at the final round of the Japanese Super Formula series, again held at Fuji Speedway. It was this circuit that hosted the first race of the championship, and then, in April, Liam also started the season with a win.

At the end of yesterday’s qualifying he started from the front row and maintained this position in the first leg of the race, chasing pole Tadasuke Makino.

Lawson then made the first mandatory pit stop and, on his return to the track, made every effort to carry out the schedule known in motorsport as undercut, or undercut. “cut”. The pace he showed on the way to the pit lane, the precise work of the Team Mugen mechanics and the speed on the exit lap of the pits ensured that he was on track when Makino in turn pitted went. .

Liam overtook him on lap 13, as the Japanese came out of the pits on cold tyres, and it was difficult for him to resist the New Zealander’s onslaught. After that, it remained only to bring the matter to an end, and Liam did not admit leadership to anyone and climbed to the top of the podium for the third time in his debut season.

The press service of the Japanese series spared no exclamation points in its brief commentary on the results of the race: “This is a race! Here’s a tactic! Fantastic driving enabled Lawson to take his third win of the season – is he really a Super Formula rookie?”

But Ritomo Miata, his main rival in the title fight, finished third, so he kept the lead in the individual standings, but today’s success allowed Liam to narrow the gap: the Japanese has 86 points, Lawson has 85 .

The next, seventh stage of the season will be held from August 18-20 at the circuit in Motegi.
