Toto Wolff: We want to give rivals a fight

Before the start of the weekend at the Hungaroring, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was optimistic about the stage ahead…

Toto Wolff: “We are looking forward to Hungary, the first of two races before the summer break. The start of the season turned out to be not entirely successful for us, but there are a few positive moments.

At Silverstone we beat our closest rivals, had a good race, climbed to the podium and extended the lead over second place rivals in the Constructors’ Championship. But the balance of power now changes every weekend. It is necessary to increase the efficiency of the car to close the gap and fight for victories.

Some teams have made more progress by fighting with us, especially McLaren. But it gives us confidence that we too can succeed. We are happy to accept this challenge and are ready to move forward.

Hungaroring is a difficult circuit, very different from Silverstone – I wonder how our novelties will work in slow corners. We have fond memories of last year’s race in Hungary, when George took pole for the first time in Formula 1 and the team achieved a double podium. In this race we await the tenth anniversary of Lewis’ first win.

I hope we will get a good result again this time. We want to build on the positive momentum we gained at Silverstone and give our opponents a fight.”
