Alpine F1 head Otmar Szafnauer is ready to admit he is surprised by McLaren’s rapid progress, but the factory Renault team is preparing updates for the car to be presented in Hungary and Belgium, and it is hoped that they will add that too.
For comparison, at Silverstone, Lando Norris took 2nd place, Oscar Piastri – 4th, and for Alpine drivers, the British Grand Prix ended in a double retirement.
“The last two laps McLaren did a lot better and that surprised us,” said Safnauer. “But it comes down to a whole combination of factors, which is best asked of this team, although I think they will say the same thing.”
The successful performance at Silverstone gave McLaren a lead over Alpine in the Constructors’ Championship, and Szafnauer stressed that it is his team’s job to rectify the situation as soon as possible: “Last year we were in a similar position, except that it was entire season Aston Martin lagged behind . We have to analyze everything properly, but Alpine is still closer to Mercedes and Ferrari, while the gap to Red Bull remains about the same.
