Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said he had lunch with Michael Masi on the eve of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. According to Wolff, he tried to convey to the former race director the idea that he should listen to criticism directed at him, but it turned out that Masi does not accept the opinions of others.
Toto Wolff: “I had lunch with him the Wednesday before the game. I said to him, “You have to accept criticism and improve. Lewis does it every day and you see yourself as the guy who always knows everything better than the rest.
I wasn’t trying to influence Masi, I just wanted to openly convey to him my idea that he shouldn’t reject other people’s opinions simply because he thinks they’re wrong.
I heard from some riders how Masi gave his briefings. Some guys said his attitude towards them was almost disrespectful. The promoter of one of the Middle East races said he was happy to hear of Masi’s departure as he had received many insults from him before.
Michael took no feedback and still didn’t fully realize what he had done wrong. He became a burden to the sport because everyone kept talking about the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the race director, even though the race director isn’t the kind of person everyone should be discussing. He has to do his job and make sure the race runs according to the rules.”
Toto Wolff added that the new race director Niels Wittich has “never made a mistake”, but the Mercedes boss did not like the latest initiative to ban jewellery: “Is this the confrontation he needs at this stage? If the race director’s most unfortunate mistake remains, I’ll survive it easily.
