Russell: The team’s job is to hold 2nd place

George Russell won his first and so far only pole position in Formula 1 at the Hungaroring a year ago and the Mercedes driver vowed to try to repeat that success.

George Russell: “Of course I will do my best, but we have to wait and see how this weekend develops. Behind some interesting races, as we performed confidently in Austria, then looked pretty good at Silverstone, but we need to keep making progress.

On the one hand, the team occupies quite a high position, but it is important to stay ahead of our rivals.

As for some instability of the results, now it is typical for many teams. Remember how great Aston Martin started the season and probably went down a bit after that. The same thing happened with Ferrari in individual races, but I’m sure this also applies to Red Bull, albeit to a lesser extent, of course. On some routes their lead reached 30 seconds, and on the previous stage it was three seconds.

Of course this was influenced by the appearance of the safety car, but still it cannot be said that they dominated at Silverstone. In general we close the gap and the impression is that the peloton as a whole is getting closer. This is great, because in this situation even some nuances can lead to noticeable changes.

Our aim is to remain second in the Constructors’ Championship, but we will continue to strive for better results and try to fight for wins.”

During the official press conference of the FIA, the opportunity was also offered to ask a question to the young TV presenters of the “children’s edition” of the Sky TV company, which is preparing for its first broadcast of the Grand Prix.

In particular, George was asked if he was jealous of Max Verstappen because he has such a fast car? And was there an idea to come to an agreement with other racers to take joint actions against the two-time world champion?

“What do you say, maybe really agree? – laughing, said George, referring to Fernando Alonso, who sat next to him. Of course we envy him! But everyone will still get a chance to climb the podium – however, he will have more such opportunities. But we hope we get such an opportunity soon enough.”
