Guanyu Zhou, Alfa Romeo’s Chinese driver, admitted last weekend was not the best for him, but he hopes there won’t be such difficulties in Hungary that have prevented him at Silverstone.
Guanyu Zhou: “To be honest, at Silverstone the preparation was not good and during the weekend we didn’t work perfectly. In addition, certain difficulties prevented me before the third training session: on the night before qualifying, we adjusted the settings very significantly, so I practically did not have time to adapt to them.
Then qualifying was held on a wet track and everything went fine, but the lap on my last attempt was the only one I did on a dry surface and I couldn’t fully develop the car’s potential.
The results of qualifying affected the rest of the weekend somewhat, although the team as a whole made a noticeable step forward. I believe we shouldn’t be in such distant positions on the Hungaroring as we were on Silverstone. Here we will be able to perform with more confidence, although we have not prepared any technical innovations for this stage.
Of course the pressure is building because at the start of the season we assumed we would get into higher positions or at least stay in 6th place in the Constructors’ Championship, just like last year. Obviously our business is getting worse now, but then again we were pretty much on the same level with Williams and Haas all season, but unfortunately both teams have now passed us.
So the pressure is on, but we need to focus on how to fully unlock the potential of the C43, which will require us to increase the pace of the car’s modernization in the second half of the season.”
