Alonso: It’s worth trying the new qualifying format

In Hungary, qualifying will be held in an updated format: in the first session, only the Hard lineup will be available to riders, in the second – only Medium, and in the final – only Soft. At the FIA press conference, Fernando Alonso commented on this innovation.

Fernando Alonso: Why don’t you try it? There aren’t many changes – we’ll have to use a certain composition in each part of the qualifier, but the conditions are the same for all of them.

The changes allow Pirelli to bring eleven kits instead of thirteen this weekend. In total, you can save a lot of kits per season for all riders, which is another reason. We must support such an undertaking in Formula 1. It is at least worth giving the new format a chance – we’ll see how this weekend goes and then adjust it for the future if necessary.

Commenting on Aston Martin’s chances at the Hungarian circuit, Fernando said: “We have certain expectations for this weekend after the problems we encountered in Austria and Silverstone. I hope we will do better this weekend as the track characteristics are similar to the team this year.

Fast corners and long straights are not among the strengths of our car – the races in Austria and Silverstone were clear proof of this. I hope we return to the best form in Hungary, although the rivals continue to improve their cars and will be strong too. It’s going to be a tough weekend, but I hope it’s fun.”
