Simone Berra: Almost all riders provided tires Hard

Simone Berra, Pirelli’s chief engineer, evaluated the effectiveness of three rubber compounds following the results of Friday’s practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Simone Bera: Quite an unusual day, given the changeable weather and the new number of tire sets this weekend. The first practice turned out to be little revealing, as the chance of precipitation in the remaining days of the weekend is minimal.

The second training turned out to be very productive – we managed to collect interesting information. For example, we saw that at such temperatures, and today the asphalt did not warm up above +34C, even the softest C5 compound could potentially be used in the race. The revamped qualifying format has definitely affected the way the teams operate, with almost all riders saving their hard tires for the next few sessions.

Today the temperature was cooler than normal, but we still saw the typical Hungaroring tire granulation, but this effect is lessened as the track is covered in waste rubber and the temperature rises.

Initial data shows that the difference in speed between Soft and Medium is in line with expectations and is between four and five tenths. We cannot judge the difference between Medium and Hard because not enough laps have been done on the hardest tyres.”
