Jacques Villeneuve: Leclair’s result is not good enough

Analyzing the events of the Canadian Grand Prix, Jacques Villeneuve believes Charles Leclerc and Ferrari could do more than finish fifth, as F1-75 clearly outperforms all other championship cars except Red Bull in speed.

Jacques Villeneuve: “Charles Leclerc for his breakthrough from the last row to 5th place is commendable, but personally he didn’t impress me too much. If you drive a Ferrari F1-75, only Red Bull cars can beat you. And when the Scuderia decided to replace Charles’ car’s power plant for the Montreal race, they wanted to finish in 4th without counting on Perez’s retirement.

But she failed. Incidentally, this is yet another confirmation that Lewis Hamilton performed well in Canada, as he was able to stay ahead of one of the Ferrari cars. In addition, a safety car drove onto the track, which also helped Charles get close to the leaders. However, he only finished fifth.

That’s not too bad, because he managed to minimize his losses and earn quite a few points, and yet it’s still not good enough. Due to a hiccup at the pit stop, he ended up behind a series of four cars and had to leave in front of her. This left him fighting for positions and wasting tires – which is why Charles couldn’t get ahead of Mercedes at the end of the race.

Of course he is a super fast racer, but for now he still makes small mistakes, which is not worth it. This was the case, for example, in Imola. After that, the team let him down a few times. We know he is capable of great speed, he can attack aggressively, but is he capable of winning a championship?

Can he withstand the pressure in critical situations like Max Verstappen does? This remains to be seen. And I wouldn’t call Leclerc the fastest driver in modern Formula 1. There is always someone who can beat you in qualifying, because that also depends on the car and its settings.

Bear in mind that Valtteri Bottas managed to get ahead of Lewis on more than one occasion in qualifying, but for this he specially tuned his car with a view to pole position. And then, over the course of the race, his Mercedes’ tires wore out quickly. Is it possible to say that the Finn was faster than Lewis, if it is up to the settings of the car? †
