Stella: It takes more time to create new products

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella spoke about the expectations for the Hungarian round of the season, the progress of Oscar Piastri and the work on technical innovations that will continue after the summer break.

Andrea Stella: “In Hungary we have a more realistic attitude, this is due to the configuration of the track and the hot weather forecast for Sunday. First let’s see how qualifying goes, and what will happen with the weather.

We will be happy if we can confidently claim points at the Hungarian circuit, which means we should be able to compete with Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes. I’m not just talking about Red Bull.”

The podium of Lando Norris at Silverstone was, of course, a pleasure for the team, but no less positively everyone took the 4th place occupied by Oscar Piastri, the debutant of the season, and the Australian also had a chance to finish in the top three.

“This Oscar result, his best of the season, was just another confirmation of his developmental trajectory for us,” Stella continued. – You can remember that already in Bahrain we noticed that he evolved from session to session, as well as from winter testing to the first race. The confidence and stability that Oscar now displays is simply a sign of his professional growth.

Of course the technical side of things is very important in our sport, it is important to work every day better than yesterday. Oscar has the engineers who used to support Daniel Ricciardo, and of course they had to learn a lot and, in a sense, approach the matter with quite a bit of self-criticism. Only with this approach do you learn from previous experiences.”

The McLaren team principal also explained why they were not bringing any technical innovations to Hungary, even though this was in the original plans: “First of all, it should be noted that we prepared an improved front wing for Oscar’s car, which could not be done on the British stage, as we had a limited number of spares there.

In terms of new products, we realized that their development and production need a little more time to fully complete the entire cycle of chassis upgrades. That is why a number of new components will appear on the machines in the next phases, even after the summer break.”
