Charles Leclerc: We know our weaknesses

Ferrari’s best result in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix was Charles Leclerc’s sixth place, while his teammate Carlos Sainz posted an eleventh fastest time and failed to make the final for the first time this season. The Italian team explained this result with a lack of speed.

Charles Leclerc (6th): “Although I’m happy with my lap, we weren’t fast enough. Our machine is very sensitive to wind, which affected the final result.

It is difficult to say who will be our main rivals tomorrow, because this season the balance of power is constantly changing. We know our weaknesses and continue to work towards their elimination.

On this track managing tire wear is key and if we can get that done we can have a good race.”

Carlo Sainz (11th): “I’m unhappy that I didn’t make it to the final for the first time of the season – I was only two thousandths short. I’ve been uncomfortable on Medium tires all weekend and I paid for them today. This has been the most exciting qualifying fight of the season so far.

Tomorrow will be difficult due to traffic and high tire wear, but I will do my best to overtake, regain positions and earn points.

Frederick Vasseur, Team leader: “Our results today have nothing to do with the new qualifying format, which is the same for everyone. Before the session we had problems fully understanding our capabilities, but what held us back was the fact that we couldn’t find a way to work with rubber.

Charles was only tenth short of securing a higher starting position on the second row. Throughout the session we showed times on par with Lewis, but in the end we couldn’t match him.

It is difficult to say what awaits us in the race, because yesterday the teams worked on a long series of circles on different compositions. Tomorrow the condition of the track will be different from Friday, so in a sense we are blindly going to the start of the race.

It’s hard to overtake on the track so the first lap will be crucial – we’ve seen this in today’s Formula 3 and Formula 2 races where we saw the “DRS trains”. An interesting challenge awaits us, so there is still work to be done tonight.”
