Max Verstappen qualified second in Hungary, just 0.003 seconds behind Lewis Hamilton. Immediately after the session, the Red Bull Racing driver said that the team had not been able to solve problems with the balance of the car.
Max’s teammate Sergio Perez reached the qualifying final for the first time since Miami, but showed only the ninth time.
Max Verstappen (2nd): “All weekend I had problems finding the optimal balance – with each session it appeared and disappeared.
Today’s qualifying turned out to be difficult. In the first and second part I felt confident in the car and I was able to attack in the corners. The first attempt in the final also turned out to be quite good, but in the second there were balance problems again. I tried to attack a little harder, but I lost control of the front and rear of the car.
In any case, I still took second place, although I should have gone ahead if there were no problems with the car, but this weekend we didn’t manage to set it up properly.
I think the novelties work, but we have not been able to figure out the settings. Today it didn’t go the way we wanted.”
Sergio Perez (9th): “Today we saw a fierce battle in qualifying, in which a lot depended on the tires due to the new format of the session. We didn’t manage to work well with the rubber, so the team doesn’t have much information available this weekend.
In the final, on the last lap, I wasn’t riding well in the first sector, which put me behind, but we had a good day and now we’re going to concentrate on the race. I believe we can be competitive and finish on the podium because we have a good car and a high race pace.
It’s difficult to overtake on this track, but I’m sure we’ll do well. We have everything we need to fight in the race.”
