Before joining AlphaTauri, Nick de Vries assisted the Mercedes team on the simulator and took part in Friday practice sessions. Speaking at a press conference, Mercedes chief race engineer Andrew Shovlin said the team would be happy to resume cooperation with the Dutch driver, but doubts he is interested in the reserve driver role.
Andrew Shovlin: “I think Nick wants to do more than just work in a simulator, he wants to race. I corresponded with him and he promised to inform me of his plans. Of course Nick has been very helpful to our team and we will be happy to have him back, but I suspect he will be looking for a place behind the wheel to race.
If he does not manage to find a place in Formula 1, then there are other competitive series in the world. It is clear that he is a very talented racer – Nick became champion in Formula 2 and Formula E, and these series are very difficult to win. He goes looking for a place in the car, behind the wheel of which he can win again.
