British Prema driver Zach O’Sullivan won the Formula 3 race in Hungary on Sunday. Together with them, teammate Dino Beganovic and MP Motorsport driver Franco Colapinto climbed to the podium.
On Sunday morning, the Formula 3 participants met with a cloudless sky. The day before, at Pirelli’s suggestion, the organizers decided to reduce the distance of the race to 19 laps. Based on tire wear during Saturday’s sprint, Pirelli engineers feared the tires wouldn’t last long without pit stops.
At the start pole position kept Zack O’Sullivan in the lead, and Dino Beganovich defended second place against the attack of Leonardo Fornaroli in the first corner, not without problems. Nikita Bedrin, who started eleventh, lost two positions on the first lap. Championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto remained 8th, while runner-up José-Maria Marti moved up to 11th.
Zach O’Sullivan immediately tried to create a lead over the pack and set the fastest time on the third lap. Bedrin lost another position to Luke Browning. Going forward, Nikita continued to roll back, finishing only twenty-three.
On the fourth lap, Marty moved into the top ten and overtook Nikola Tzolov on the first corner braking. On lap six, Bortoleto passed Johnny Edgar in a similar maneuver for seventh.
José Maria continued to gain positions and on lap seven moved up to ninth, overtaking Christian Mansell. Another circle under Marty’s attacks could not stand Johnny Edgar.
On the ninth lap, in the battle for third place at the first corner, Franco Colapinto overtook Fornaroli. On the next lap, Leonardo lost another position – Oliver Goethe overtook him in the outer radius at the second corner. Kylen Frederick returned to the pits due to technical problems with the car – the race was over for him.
On lap 13, Leonardo Fornaroli fell back to sixth and passed Paul Aron. Behind them, Marty tried to attack Bortoleto, but locked the front wheels on the brakes in turn one and went off track. Marty returned to the track without losing position.
On the fourteenth lap, Marty made another attempt to overtake Bortoleto – this time the braking maneuver in turn two proved successful. The Campos rider followed Fornaroli in the battle for sixth place.
In the seventeenth lap, Bortoleto overtook Leonardo Fornaroli in the battle for seventh place. On the last lap, Fornaroli also overtook Johnny Edgar.
Zach O’Sullivan confidently rode the race to his fourth win of the season, over two seconds ahead of Beganovich and over six seconds ahead of Colapinto. The result moved him up to second place in the individual standings, one point ahead of José Maria Martí.
The next Formula 3 round will be held in a week’s time on July 28-30 at the Belgian circuit of Spa.
