In Canada, the Mercedes driver took the podium for the fifth time this season – Lewis Hamilton finished third. The W13 looked reasonably competitive last weekend, but team boss Toto Wolff warned Mercedes fans that the improvement could be short-lived.
“One swallow doesn’t make a spring,” said Toto Wolff after finishing the race in Canada. – We already saw this swallow in Barcelona, but then it flew away somewhere, so we have to be careful with predictions. On Friday in Montreal we lacked speed, but on Saturday we looked good on the wet track.
Our cars were among the fastest in the race. During the second stint, Lewis and George rode at almost the same pace as the leaders, but not on all laps. It’s good to see, but we have to be careful. There’s still a lot of work to do to get back on the front row – we’re not in such positions yet.
We’ve done well at Silverstone in the past, and the surface on this track is smoother than the previous three, but still not the same as in Barcelona. We should not overestimate our own expectations – we should estimate the situation realistically. The team will review the data collected to find workable solutions not only for Silverstone, but also for future races.
Our car has to increase the downforce so that the ground clearance is not so low. We have a clear direction of work – we see that other machines are configured for more free space. This is an area where we need to improve.”
