Max Verstappen is one of the best drivers in modern Formula 1, a two-time world champion, and now he is confidently on his way to his third title. But this does not mean that he knows all the secrets of driving four-wheeled vehicles – for example, he began to master the art of drifting quite recently, although, according to him, he always dreamed of it.
And the New Zealander Mike Widdett, a master of this genre, helped him in this by entrusting Max with his monster of 600 hp, built on the basis of the Mazda RX7. A suitable location was chosen as a study place near the British Milton Keynes, where the base of Red Bull Racing is located.
Under the guidance of Whiddett, nicknamed “Mad Mike”, Max learned how to properly rotate donuts, write “eights” on the sidewalk, change direction using a technique known as the “Scandinavian Flick”, etc.
Max Verstappen: “Learning to drift was pure madness – I didn’t know what to expect. I think this is the first time in a few years that I’ve been so nervous, because it’s all contrary to my usual driving style.
But it felt like I was 16 years old again – I experienced such joy when I got behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car for the first time! Once the engine started and I started drifting with all four wheels spinning, I entered my natural comfort zone where I can feel the limits of the car, just like in F1. I felt that same adrenaline rush and my instincts took over.”
And everything else is told in this crisp 8 minute video prepared by the Red Bull Motorsports press service…
