Audi and Porsche will announce plans in July, will Honda return?

The FIA World Council is due to approve the powertrain rules for the 2026 season on June 29, but according to Auto Motor und Sport this will not happen.

It was originally intended that after the World Council meeting, Porsche would announce its return to Formula 1 at the Austrian Grand Prix, the home stage of Red Bull Racing, with which the Stuttgart company plans to collaborate. Audi was due to make their statement about participating in Formula 1 a week later, but the plans had to be abandoned.

With the approval of the regulations for engines being postponed again, Porsche and Audi are starting to get nervous. This is understood in the FIA and Formula 1 – prior to the Canadian Grand Prix, FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem and championship leader Stefano Domenicali personally assured Porsche and Audi management in separate conference calls that the World Council would approve the regulations in July.

What is the reason for the delay in the adoption of the regulation? With differences of opinion in the wording, which is intended to prevent the creation of “grey” areas that can be used by any of the car manufacturers. Under the new agreements, a Formula 1 committee meeting should be held in the days of the Austrian Grand Prix, at which the final version of the power plant regulations will be agreed in 2026 and presented to the World Council for approval.

After the World Council has approved the regulations, Porsche and Audi will have 15 days to commit to Formula 1. Thus, an official public announcement from the German manufacturers can be expected on the days of the French Grand Prix or the Hungarian Grand Prix at the end of July.

In addition to Porsche and Audi, two more power plant suppliers may appear in Formula 1 in 2026. The first are our good friends from Honda. The Japanese are reportedly actively investigating the possibility of returning and are even willing to buy Red Bull’s AlphaTauri team, making it factory-fit.

The name of another potential manufacturer has not been mentioned, but more details are expected to be released after the summer holidays.
