Alex Albon thought Nick de Vries would get more time at Red Bull to adapt to Formula 1, but after ten races Daniel Ricciardo took over the Dutchman’s place in AlphaTauri.
Albon once experienced the methods of Red Bull himself, when he was stripped of his place after a season and a half in a team from Milton Keynes and sent to the DTM, but this only benefited him.
“With Nick, everything went faster than I expected,” Williams RacingNews365 quoted the driver as saying. – It is clear that Red Bull was very pleased with Daniel’s work during testing, and it seems that this has speeded up the decision. I know Nick well, he’s a great racer, but ten races is not enough. I thought it would happen at least before the summer holidays.”
Albon credits Ricciardo’s few months away from the paddock with helping the Australian regain his confidence: “I also missed a year and that really did me good. In Daniel’s case, the break was shorter. If you perform in this circus and your business is not doing well, but you have to constantly move from one song to another, then you simply will not be able to analyze everything and find out what is happening.
It is like spinning in the drum of a washing machine, but if you have time to think about everything, it is important to make improvements. It is also helpful to take a break from racing and rebuild mentally. This is also very important, because if you begin to lose faith in yourself, then during such a break you can get rid of all these demons.
I appreciated the period I spent in the DTM, because there you had to drive a slightly different technique. But it gave me confidence as I kept racing, and that takes confidence, and driving that car helped me. When I returned to Formula 1 and got behind the wheel of Williams for the first time during winter testing, I immediately felt that I was driving with more confidence than before the break.
I look at Daniel now, I see he has a great attitude, and I thought the same thing happened to him.
