Mercedes technical director James Ellison acknowledged that the prudent development path used to avoid a repeat of last year’s car buildup has prevented the team from doing better this season.
James Ellison: “Last year we had a lot of success, but for the 2023 season the FIA changed the regulations to provide some protection against build-up.
In the winter we were faced with a choice: act aggressively and use the anti-sway protection of the regulations, after achieving greater car efficiency, or act more prudently and find our own solutions to the sway that ruined our season last year. We chose the prudent path, knowing that if these issues persist, it will be easier to fix the error.
This year we will try to find out if we have been too careful and make the necessary adjustments.”
