Former Formula 1 driver, Sky Sport pundit Karun Chandhok believes Alpine can repeat the fate of the Toyota team…
Karun Chandhok: “The reality is that the Alpine team, which is owned by Renault, is sixth in the constructors’ championship with the sixth fastest car, representing the third largest global brand in the automotive world.
The question is whether they will continue to work with managers who have not previously been associated with motorsport and Formula 1. Some departments of the Enstone base now employ people who come from the road car department.
Perhaps this is Renault’s business strategy, but the same thing happened with Toyota 20 years ago. You have to make a choice – take a path that will allow you to succeed in Formula 1, or abandon the corporate approach, which I am sure will not work.
Three great figures left the team. Alan Permane has been there for over 33 years and Pat Fry seems to have gone off on his own, no one has kicked him out – he’ll be a huge boost to Williams, and Alpine is still unsure how to move on.
