Hayvel Thomas on improving the reliability of Mercedes engines

Hywel Thomas, Managing Director of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, admitted that several power plant failures at the start of the season caused serious concerns for the attendants, but then these issues were resolved…

Hywel Thomas: “The first three races of this year have been a big disappointment for us, with technical failures in each of them due to problems with the factory power plant and customer teams. This forced us to focus on finding the true causes and not just solving a specific malfunction. It lasted the entire first quarter of the season.

We have thought a lot about what changes are needed so that failures do not occur in the future. And made adjustments to internal processes. Part of the reliability is amplified by how we envision the perfect race weekend.

For example, a perfect Friday when we unpack the power plant. We had too many problems on Friday, so we really understood what the power plant was going through, so all the settings were correct.”
