Australian company Metaphor Corporation, which had won a tender in Italy, acquired what was left of the historic race track, located on the island of Sicily near the city of Syracuse.
However, the new owners of the route are not going to restore it, but plan to build up this area with real estate objects.
Once, in the 1950s and 1960s, this circuit hosted the unofficial Grand Prix of Syracuse, won by famous racers – Luigi Villoresi, Alberto Ascari, Nino Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, John Surtiss, Jim Clark and this is not a complete list. The last time such a Formula 1 race took place there was in 1967.
In recent years, the Syracuse City Council has made repeated attempts to sell this property, but the long-abandoned highway and old infrastructure were in a deplorable state, so it didn’t spark much interest and a buyer was only now found. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Australian company paid only three million euros or a little more.
According to the newspaper, the circuit could only be used for testing new models of cars and motorcycles for decades, but just over 20 years ago the track was rebuilt and it even received official FIA certification. But then the then owners went bankrupt and the track was eventually closed.
Recently, the Italian motorcycle club ACI, together with tire manufacturer Pirelli, announced that it wanted to invest in the restoration, but unexpectedly dropped those plans, after which the Sicilian circuit was put out to tender again.
Apparently, his story is finally coming to an end.
