George Russell: It’s a privilege to learn from Lewis

George Russell is well into his first full season with Mercedes, 34 points ahead of seasoned teammate Lewis Hamilton after nine races. Despite his higher position in the championship, the young rider considers it a privilege to ride on the same team with the seven-time world champion.

George Russell: “Personally I think we have started the season well, although there is room for improvement in certain areas. I consider myself in a privileged position because my partner is Lewis, and I learn a lot from him – how he works, how he interacts with engineers, how he motivates the team. All this inspires me.

When we talk about the technical side of the problem, Lewis makes a pretty strong impression. A lot of people don’t know this or don’t appreciate it. As I said, there are still opportunities to add, but in terms of results, everything is fine. I don’t think we could have achieved much more if we had judged the season appropriately. With the exception of Bahrain, we finished as high as possible.

We have to look at the positive results and evaluate the results rationally. Given the kind of car we have at our disposal, there’s no point in being upset that we didn’t win a single race of the season. I think the team did a great job getting the points for us. We have to look at things positively and move forward. Hopefully, when we have a faster car at our disposal, we will be in good shape to fight for victories.”
