Wolff will replace D’Ambrosio at the races if necessary

Toto Wolff said that if for some reason he has to miss some stage of the season, the duties of the head of the Mercedes team will be carried out by Jerome D’Ambrosio.

The 37-year-old Belgian, ex-Formula 1 driver, who once drove for the Russian Marussia team and also led Venturi Racing in Formula E until last year, has been in charge of Mercedes’ youth program since March 2023.

But even then, commenting on his appointment, Wolff stressed that he wants to see how D’Ambrosio will grow as a manager. Around the same time, February to be exact, James Vowles, the former chief strategist at Mercedes, took over as team leader at Williams, and Jerome took over alongside Wolff on race weekends. Apparently he justified the trust placed in him.

“If I miss the race weekend, Jérôme will replace me,” Wolff told the French edition of Auto Hebdo. – For 11 years of my work in the team, this happened only three times, but such situations must be foreseen. Now he has to gain the trust of the team and the paddock, he has time for that, but if I can’t be at the race he will replace me.

Jérôme did a great job last year when he was in charge of the Venturi team in Formula E. It is of course a small structure and cannot be compared to our team of 2500 people. However, he is already actively involved in the team’s work… and I feel he has what it takes to handle this role.

At the same time, it is not yet clear whether D’Ambrosio will make his debut in this capacity at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix, as Wolff was injured during the August holiday.
