The organizers of the Grand Prix of the Netherlands have announced that they will stop setting off fireworks by fans in the stands of Zandvoort during the Formula 1 race weekend.
Last year qualifying at Zandvoort had to be stopped with red flags because one of the spectators threw a burning orange flare on the track at the start of the second session. Later in the session, another fan followed suit and threw fire in the first corner.
Both offenders were handed over to the police and after the session, Max Verstappen asked fans not to do this anymore: “Fires add entertainment, but there are limits to their numbers and there are rules of conduct. I urge viewers not to do this again. As a result, the session is stopped and the offender is handed over to the police. Plus it can be dangerous.”
Last year, after the incident in qualifying, the use of flares was already restricted, so they could only be used after the finish of the race.
