WEC: Porsche 963 hypercar unveiled at Goodwood

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed that started the day before, the latest Porsche 963 hypercar was presented, which will compete in two endurance racing championships simultaneously from 2023 – in the FIA WEC and the IMSA overseas series.

We talked about the tests of this car a few months ago, but then it was in a special camouflage color, and now the Porsche Penske Motorsport team has presented the car in all its glory, ie in the Porsche racing colors white, red and black .

“After 7,889 km of testing in the first half of 2022, we are on the right track, but we still have a lot of work to do before the start of next season,” said Thomas Laudenbach, Porsche Vice President responsible for sports programs at Porsche. “Our new Porsche hypercar continues the legacy of legendary models such as the 917, 935, 956, 962 and 919 Hybrid.

I am optimistic that in terms of technology everything is fine and in addition we have created the right structures within the team that will help fight for victories in an interesting competition of many factory teams and different concepts.”

The official debut of the Porsche 963 on the track is scheduled for January 2023 – these cars will start the famous American race “24 Hours of Daytona”. But Porsche plans to hold a “dress rehearsal” sooner: These LMDh-class sports prototypes will compete in November’s 8-hour race in Bahrain, the final round of the WEC season, but will not count.

In accordance with the technical requirements of this class, the Porsche 963 is based on the chassis category LMP2. Built by the Canadian company Multimatic, several parts of the machine, also standardized by regulations, are supplied by Bosch, Williams Advanced Engineering and Xtrac. The ‘heart’ of the car is a Porsche hybrid powerplant with a 4.6-litre V8 engine with two turbines, with an output of about 670 hp.
