This weekend, the Dutch Grand Prix is not the only event directly relevant to the world of Formula 1: the traditional Minardi Historic Day festival will be held for the seventh time in Imola on August 26-27.
As the name implies, it is dedicated to the team founded in 1979 by Giancarlo Minardi, who competed in the World Championship from 1985 as the Minardi F1 Team and was sold to Red Bull in the autumn of 2005, becoming Scuderia Toro Rosso and 15 years later years was renamed AlphaTauri.
Many veterans of Italian motorsport will participate in the festival, and not only those who have driven Minardi cars in different years: Gianni Morbidelli, Luca Badoer, Alessandro Nannini, Arturo Merzario, Riccardo Patrese, Emmanue Pirro, Bruno Giacomelli and others.
There will also be representatives from the younger generation of drivers, including Brando Badoer, son of Luca, who is starting his career in Formula 4, Alistair Jung, son of former MInardi driver, Malaysian Alex Jung, and Lorenzo Patrese, son of Ricciardo – both compete in GT.
Engineers who have worked in this team at one stage of their career will also come to Imola, for example, Aldo Costa and Laurent Mekis – by the way, it is he who will become the new head of AlphaTauri next year.
Of course, anyone on the Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit this weekend will see a lot of the most diverse racing equipment from different eras, and this will not only include historic Minardi cars, but also Tyrrell, Arrows, Surtees, Leyton House, Onyx, Osella Fondmetal, Jaguar, Williams and even Ferrari.
The Tyrrell should be mentioned separately because Imola will bring the P34, a unique six-wheeler that made waves in Formula 1 in 1976, but soon such designs were banned.
The organizers of the Minardi Historical Day also promise an interesting cultural program and several exhibitions dedicated to the history of Italian motorsport.
