The Chinese Grand Prix has not been held for three years in a row and will not return to the world championship until spring 2024, but Guanyu Zhou, who visited his home country during his summer vacation, assures that the popularity of motorsport there is only growing, especially among young people.
Guanyu Zhou: “I am very happy to have visited my home country again, and in the first few days I attended several business meetings with our team’s Chinese sponsors and people from my surroundings. In China, motor racing is growing in popularity, especially among the younger generation, among boys who are five to ten years younger than me.
They already know a lot about Formula 1 in general, and they generally talk about the improvements that Liberty Media has managed to make. Interest in the World Cup is growing not only in the United States, but also in China and Asia in general. That’s great, but the most important thing is that my home race will take place again next year and I’m looking forward to it.
This year I was able to race better the way I wanted, and this helped improve the results somewhat. Last year my weak point was qualifying, the speed in one fast lap, and the team as a whole was not very stable.
In 2023 we work more efficiently, although we are of course still not as fast as we would like. It is clear that we expected more, and the season is not easy, but we have set ourselves clear goals for the second half: the team is aiming for seventh place in the Constructors’ Championship.
There is a very intense rivalry going on between Alfa Romeo, Williams, AlphaTauri and Haas, but I think we are still up to the task. In the coming races, the team will present a number of technical innovations so that we are ready for the second half of the season.
If we talk about next year, I was much more nervous around this time last season than I am now, and let’s hope we can successfully complete the negotiations with the team that started before the summer break. I like to work with her, especially in the future, she will get factory status, and for us this is an important moment. Therefore, I will try to get the highest possible results on track, and the rest should become clear over time during more detailed negotiations with the team.
