Mansell has put his trophy collection up for auction

Auction house RM Sotheby’s is holding an auction from October 4-11, where anyone with a substantive interest in motorsport history, yet with ample financial resources, can purchase a wide variety of memorabilia related to Nigel Mansel’s legacy.

The 1992 world champion decided to part with his unique collection of trophies, which was kept for a long time in his personal museum on the island of Jersey and consists of many items related in one way or another to different phases of his career.

This includes trophies for race wins Mansell won in 1992, in his championship season in Formula 1, and in the 1993 American IndyCar series, which he also won on the first attempt.

In addition, the collection includes many helmets that he used in races in different years, overalls, racing shoes, but also the handlebars of his cars and even motorcycles. And this is not only the Honda ST-70 minibike in the colors of Ferrari, on which Mansell moved around the racetracks and paddocks in 1989, but also the mighty BMW R18 cruiser with 90 hp in the personal version of Il Leone Edition.

In total, Nigel Mansell’s collection contains about 330 different items that can be purchased individually, and the most expensive lots are the helmets of the former racer, who was the idol of British fans several decades ago.

For example, a helmet he wore in his triumphant 1992 season at Williams costs around £50,000, while an older 1989 Ferrari-period helmet is priced slightly lower at £40,000. The same amount will have to be paid for the said BMW motorcycle on which the number 5 flaunts – under it Mansell played as part of Williams. And for the cups they charge 10 thousand.

The situation is truly unique, as according to official information from the press service of RM Sotheby’s, none of these items have ever been put up for auction and all of them are directly related to the legacy of the famous British champion.
