Valtteri Bottas set the ninth fastest time in the second training session at Zandvoort and lost more than five tenths of a second to session leader Lando Norris. Guanyu Zhou turned out to be two tenths slower than his partner and was on the fifteenth line in the protocol. Alfa Romeo noted that they have a chance of a good result this weekend.
Valttery Bottas (9th): “It’s nice to be back on track, especially on such a difficult and interesting track. The track is narrow, there is little space and there is a lot of sand on the tarmac outside the race track. Qualifying is expected to be interesting as everyone will try to get behind the car in front of them in their effort.
It was important to assess the car right away and first impressions are not bad. We knew that the gaps would be minimal on a short lap, but in my opinion we are already in tenth position in terms of pure speed.
Of course there is still a lot to be done – not only in preparation for qualifying, but also to work on race pace. To perform as well as possible in qualifying, everything has to be done perfectly, but we can fight for a good result.”
Guanyu Zhou (15th): “The first impression was good, although we lost some time in the first session due to technical checks. But we managed to make up for lost time and run a clean second practice so we are in good shape to move forward. You still have to adjust the settings, but this is the usual work.
The results are very tight, so a difference of one or two tenths can make a huge difference. In the second practice we managed to take a step forward, so the car has potential.
The goal for tomorrow is to reach the qualifying final. Given the track characteristics, the session will be difficult, but we have potential.”
