On Friday in Zandvoort, the riders used all three slicks in two training sessions: C1, C2 and C3. Simone Berra, Pirelli’s chief engineer, assessed the effectiveness of rubber on the Dutch track.
Simone Barra: “In general, the day turned out to be useful for us, as we managed to collect a lot of information about the three compositions that were brought to Zandvoort, in short and long series of circles. Compared to last year, we brought in a new composition of C1, which, judging from what we saw today, deteriorated much less. At the same time, it was mainly used during the first practice session, when the asphalt of the track was very dirty and offered little grip.
In relatively cool conditions, the soft C3 compound can be the most important in the race. So the tire choice situation for the race remains open, so we are waiting for an interesting and unpredictable weekend.
If we talk about the difference in speed between the compositions, then due to the rapid improvement in the condition of the asphalt, it is impossible to accurately assess this difference. The weather forecast promises a significant chance of rain, especially tomorrow, and that will also be an unknown factor that we have to take into account.”
