A ridiculous and apparently minor accident in turn three led to a fracture of the carpal bone of Daniel Ricciardo’s left hand. Team leader Franz Tost commented on the situation for Viaplay…
Franz Tost: “Unfortunately, Daniel has broken his carpal bone and cannot fly. In Zandvoort he will not drive, we will see how the situation will be in Monza, he may need an operation. The doctors will make a decision in the coming days.
It takes an average person up to six weeks to recover from such an injury, but he is a Formula 1 driver and I hope this process will be shortened. We really want to see him in the car as soon as possible.
A strange accident where he couldn’t do anything. Piastri in front of him crashed into a tire barrier, Daniel was right behind him, unable to react and also having an accident.
I told him that the whole team was sorry, that he had done a great job and could have made the top 10. I said he would get in the car as soon as he recovered.
He shouldn’t take what happened too seriously because something worse could happen, but such is life. We look forward to his return.
Now Daniel smiles, he is in a pretty good mood, although he is in a lot of pain, because the injury is quite serious. Hopefully he can get some sleep at night and then go to another doctor for a fuller assessment of the situation before they decide what to do.”
