Max Verstappen took pole position at Zandvoort for the third year in a row. On a decisive attempt he was half a second ahead of closest pursuer Lando Norris, but after the session he admitted that qualifying was difficult.
His Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Pérez qualified seventh and is looking to take the podium in the race.
Max Verstappen (1st): “Very difficult qualifying. We started the session on intermediate tyres, but the new tarmac was very slippery. It all came down to controlling your circles and avoiding trouble. I think we did well with the team.
In the final we switched to slicks, but in some parts of the track it was only dry on the stretch, so certain risks remained. But I really enjoyed the last fast lap.
In the third part of qualifying I first rode on intermediate tyres. It was our first time on this track in such conditions and we underestimated how quickly the tarmac dried up. We didn’t have the relevant experience, but now it doesn’t matter because in the end we did everything right.
There is always pressure, but if you can handle it, you experience incredible emotions.
Sergio Perez (7th): “The track conditions during qualifying were very difficult. In the final I didn’t manage to get off for an attempt when the asphalt was as dry as possible, but it’s always easy to talk about strategy after everything is done.
Now I am fully focused on the race. Our car is very fast in the long run, so I hope I can get on the podium.”
