The McLaren drivers finished in the top ten at Zandvoort, but admitted that the results could have been much better if they had made the right decisions together with the team today.
Lando Norris (7th): “I’m not very happy with the result, although I think we did everything in our power in the second half of the race. We managed to get ahead of a few cars through an earlier pit stop and then more or less spent the rest of the race correctly, but at the very beginning we lost everything and opted to stay on the slicks when there was too much lots of water. On track. We have lost much more than we could have imagined.
It’s not like the game was over after that, but almost everything was lost, so I’m upset. We tried to bounce back, but the car didn’t perform well on the race distance, and when we had to get behind the rival cars in the turbulence zone, it was quite difficult to control.
So I had to work hard to stay ahead of Tsunoda, while Hamilton only needed one circle to overtake another car. In general, we have something to work on, including myself.
And at the very beginning of the race it was difficult to understand how to act correctly. There were many questions and no clear answers. When everyone went to the pits, but not me, my first concern was how to keep the car on the track. Then I was surprised how easily Sergio Perez overtook me, and for some reason we kept on slicks.
If we talk about the contact with George Russell’s car on the last restart, we actually had an interesting duel, but unfortunately it ended with a puncture for him. Of course, no one wanted this, but the edges of the underside of the car are so sharp and such problems can happen very quickly. Of course I’m worried about him because we fought well and he left me a spot on the track… But racing is racing.
Oscar Pistri (9th): “I think we could have done better. It’s not like the appearance of the safety car ruined the race for us. In fact, the lap before I locked the wheels. At the same time there were a lot of things that otherwise should have happened.
Overall, I believe we made reasonable decisions and fought well, but we didn’t use every opportunity. Considering that we initially ended up in the tail of the pack, we can say that we bounced back quite nicely. Of course we now have a few lessons to learn – this applies to the team and to me personally. Let’s see if we can do better in the next phase.”
