Mansell: Would love to be back in Goodwood in 10 years!

Nigel Manssel, the 1992 World Champion, is one of the many motorsport heroes taking part in the Goodwood Festival of Speed program. This weekend he put his old racing suit back on, took off his helmet and enjoyed driving the old cars in which he once won races on the Formula 1 circuits.

Nigel Mansell: “The Goodwood Festival of Speed is growing in popularity every year and now this event simply has the highest status. I am very proud to be a part of it.

Today I drive the Ferrari 640 I drove in Formula 1 in 1989 and I feel exactly the same emotions as then. As soon as the V12 engine fires up and the car starts to vibrate, you feel those vibrations and take your breath away.”

On Sunday, Mansell will drive another car, the Williams FW14B which won its only title in 1992.

“Is it really 30 years ago? It feels like I’m still 28 years old! laughed the British Formula 1 veteran. “To take part in the Festival of Speed, to be back in the cockpit of this car and take part in the hill climb race is a real privilege! I am very grateful to have this opportunity. Besides, there will be a few surprises on Sunday that I can’t talk about right now.

I understand Frank Williams has passed away, but I’m grateful to him, Patrick Head, the entire Williams team and his sponsors, because that’s when I won the title. I did it not only for myself, but also for my country and all the British fans. This was spectacular! And I will be happy to return to Goodwood in 10 years to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this event!”
