Fernando Alonso: The car literally flew in the rain

Fernando Alonso finished second at Zandvoort, repeating his best result of the season. For the Aston Martin driver, this is already the seventh podium of the season and, according to this indicator, he shares second place with Sergio Perez, second only to Max Verstappen.

Fernando Alonso (2nd): “Very tight race, but in the rain we were very fast. Maybe I pitted a lap later than I had to, but in the rain the car literally flew. In such weather conditions, the driver has to trust the car, and today I trusted her.

I enjoyed the race – thanks to all the fans for the support and energy – I was afraid I would never be able to feel the atmosphere of the podium in Zandvoort, so it means a lot to me that I will share this podium with Max and Pierre Gasly.

The red flags made it one of those races where it’s hard to maintain maximum concentration for long periods of time, but the spectators helped with their energy. I’m glad Max has such fans, and I congratulate him.

At the last restart I even thought about overtaking Max, but then I realized that if I succeed, they might not let me off the track! (laughs) That’s why I chose second place.”

Lance walk (11th): “We expected a different result. Due to the changeable weather conditions it was difficult to choose the optimal strategy, the first laps we made a mistake with the choice of tires. We hoped to survive the first downpour on slicks, but the rain was heavier than expected and we switched to intermediate tires too late.

As the pack stabilized, I got stuck in traffic and couldn’t bounce back. It’s a pity it happened. the car worked well, it was possible to achieve more, but that’s the race. We will learn from today’s mistakes and in Monza we will try to do better.”

Mike Crack, team leader: “What a race! Fantastic second place for Fernando and the team. In difficult conditions he raced very smartly and showed a high pace on dry and wet tracks.

This result is of great importance to the whole team on track and at the base, it proves that our hard work is paying off. We have crossed the 200 mark for the first time, which will give us even more motivation at the end of the season. It’s a shame we couldn’t optimize the race for Lance, the decision to stay on slicks in the rain robbed him of his points chances.”
