Before the weekend, Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko called the stage in Zandvoort one of the defining stages for Sergio Perez’s future career – and was dissatisfied with his performance.
In the pouring rain at the end of the race, the Mexican crashed first into the barrier in the first corner and then into the wall at the entrance to the pit lane. When the race was stopped with red flags, the mechanics were able to repair his car, but he was later ticketed for speeding in the pit lane and was only fourth in the protocol.
Helmut Marko: “Sergio was very lucky with the red flags. He badly damaged the car at the entrance to the pit lane and was also fined for braking too late. Had the mechanics not repaired his car while the race was stopped by red flags, he would not have made it to the finish.
We still have faith in him, Sergio should finish second in the individual standings this season. But he puts pressure on himself. Although, to be honest, everyone except Max is having a hard time right now.
Return of Elbon? He improved a lot, but now I don’t see any driver who would compete at Max’s level.”
