When it started to rain heavily at the end of the race in Zandvoort, only Esteban Ocon was fitted with tires for heavy rain, which he was extremely dissatisfied with.
Esteban Ocon: “Unfortunately at the end of the race we missed a good chance to score points. I was not happy that the team had chosen tires for heavy rain, nor that I had to wait an extra lap on the slicks before the pit stop.
The tires just weren’t ready when I told the team I was going into the pits. I had to stay on track and during this lap on slicks I lost five positions, dropping from sixth to eleventh.
I didn’t need rain tires. Okay, if we had such a speed reserve, like Red Bull, but we don’t. Secondly, if you have to fit rain tires it means the race will be stopped by red flags, which it did.
There is no time when rain tires are better. They are very slow. And if track conditions are only suitable for such tyres, then they are not suitable for Formula 1 cars.
