In the days of the Dutch Grand Prix, Red Bull motorsport adviser Helmut Marko said Sergio Perez has no guarantee of a future in the team. However, after the race at Zandvoort, Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner confirmed that the Mexican driver will continue to drive for the Milton Keynes team in 2024, in accordance with the terms of the current contract.
Christian Horner: “Sergio’s prospects for next year are clear: he is a Red Bull Racing driver and we have signed a contract with him.
We are satisfied with his work. At the race at Zandvoort he had bad luck with a speed limiter in the pit lane, but Sergio remains second in the drivers’ standings and is the only driver besides Max Verstappen to win two races this year.
Sergio is easy to criticize because his team-mate has set the bar very high. Perez will be our driver in 2024.
Max is going through a period of his career where he is otherwise out of reach. I don’t think any other Formula 1 driver behind the wheel of our current car would have achieved the same results as Max. In a sense, his partner’s role is unenviable, but that’s because the bar is set very high.
If Max hadn’t raced, Sergio would have won four or five races this year, so he’s doing his job. Pérez is second in the drivers’ standings, he was fast in the race, but was unlucky with speeding in the pit lane. I hope Sergio wins a few more races before the end of the season.”
