In the middle of last year, Red Bull terminated the contract with youth program participant Yuri Vips because of racist statements during an online game. The Estonian driver finished the season in Formula 2, and did not start in 2023.
The day before it was announced that Vips will spend the last two stages of the season of the IndyCar series in Portland and on the Laguna Seca circuit as part of the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team. Commenting on the Feeder Series, Urey said he sees the next two races as an opportunity to secure a permanent spot in IndyCar in 2024. In addition, Vips added that he is no longer thinking about a career in Formula 1.
Yuri Vips: “I feel like I’ve grown as a person and I’m grateful for the second chance. I totally understand why everyone was outraged at my act. Now I fully understand what the word I said means, and the outrage against me was fully justified. I will forgive everyone I have hurt.
At the moment I’m not thinking about Formula 1 at all. I really like the United States – I spent some time in the country and attended several IndyCar races. I really liked this series, which is completely different from Formula 1.
I kind of forgot about Formula 1, and now I have no ambitions related to this championship. I’m focused on getting a full-time IndyCar seat next season.”
