Haas has confirmed Niko Hülkenberg’s contract at Zandvoort until the end of 2024. In an interview with the team’s press service, the German driver commented on this agreement and shared his opinion on the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Q: Congratulations on continuing to work with the team next year. Does the signed contract give the driver extra confidence behind the wheel because he doesn’t have to be distracted by negotiations?
Nico HulkenbergA: I’m glad we were able to announce this great news. Now you can focus on the racing and how you add. We have worked well with the team, so we have a great opportunity to strengthen our position in the championship.
Q: What is special about Monza, which hosts the Italian Grand Prix this weekend?
Nico Hulkenberg: Monza has an interesting and very fast circuit, steeped in history, and the tifosi are incredibly passionate.
At this track, the car needs to be set up for low downforce, so I’m not looking forward to an easy weekend. We will try to collect as much information as possible that will help in the remaining races of the season.
Q: This weekend, for the second time in the season, after the Budapest round, an alternative tire distribution option will be used, with each rider having two less sets of slicks than usual. Doesn’t reducing the tire sets detract from the spectacle?
Nico Hulkenberg: For the first time in Budapest we tried an alternative tire distribution option. I believe that we should be open to changes, but these changes should not be at the expense of the entertainment, which is what the fans come to the court for. I support the idea of looking at tires from an environmental point of view, but decisions should not limit the work of teams on the track.
Question the Race in Monza closes the European part of the season. How important is the European market for Formula 1?
Nico Hulkenberg: Europe is the birthplace of motorsport, there are many iconic and difficult circuits. The popularity of Formula 1 has increased significantly over the years – I felt it after my return.
It’s great that we organize races that open up Formula 1 to new fans and invite celebrities to watch the races. I think we have a good balance now when it comes to representing different countries.
