Kevin Magnussen: Monza is unique in everything

Kevin Magnussen hasn’t scored any points in the last eight races – the Haas F1 car isn’t fast enough this year, but he’s happy with his contract extension for next season and looking forward to more…

Q: Congratulations on confirming your contract with Haas F1. Does it give you confidence to drive?
Kevin Magnussen: I am very happy to continue driving for Haas F1 next year. I’ve been working with the team for six years, next year will be seventh, now it’s my big family, my home in Formula 1. We’ve had a lot of good moments, I hope there will be more next year.

This season is not easy for us, but the team has great potential, we are moving in the right direction, we just need to improve our car. I am curious what we can achieve next season.

Q: Before the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. What is it about this song that puts it on par with other historical venues? Do you like racing it?
Kevin Magnussen: I like Monza, this race is always one of the iconic. A classic old school circuit with character, unique for its long straights and low downforce. It’s a slipstream race!

Monza is unique in every way. A different style of driving, a different character of fighting with rivals, a special atmosphere. Since Haas is almost all Italian, this is one of those races where we always want to do better. For us, this is half a home race.

Q: This is the second phase, after Hungary, in which Formula 1 is testing an “alternative tire strategy”. What changes do you think should be made to reduce the number of tires brought to the race, without sacrificing entertainment?
Kevin Magnussen: I don’t think it made much difference in Hungary, except that we did fewer laps in practice. I think the best way to save tires is to rethink the qualifying format so that all riders do one fast lap, as before. This would save at least four sets.

Ask Before the last European race before Formula 1 goes to the away stages. Since this is your home region, how important is the European market to you?
Kevin Magnussen: For our team, the most important races are held in America. Of course I like to participate in European races, where Danes are in the stands, but in the US team I really enjoy racing in the US.

The last two races with Haas in the US I scored points last year in Austin and this year in Miami it would be great to continue this trend in Austin. In the European part of the season we didn’t perform as well as expected, so I’m looking forward to continuing, and most importantly, racing in the US.
