Robert Wickens took his first win since he suffered a spinal cord injury in an IndyCar race at the Pocono Oval in August 2018.
We told you that the Canadian driver has been working hard to get back behind the wheel and try to recover as much as possible, and this season he is competing in the US touring car series IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge for the Bryan Herta Autosport (BHA) team, driving a specially prepared Hyundai Elantra N TCR with manual operation.
And then the day came when Robert, along with his partner Mark Wilkins, was able to win the race at Watkins Glen. Their car crossed the finish line just 0.0374 seconds earlier than Alfa Romeo’s closest rivals, but it was still enough to give Robert a taste of victory.
The foundation was laid in the first half of the distance, when he drove in Hyundai, after which his partner replaced him and finished what Robert had started.
“This is a milestone win, although it didn’t bring me the brightest of emotions – maybe because I was watching our car cross the finish line from the side,” said Wickens. “I think when you’re behind the wheel, you have a different feeling because of the adrenaline and everything else.
But we are back at the level where we should be. Incredible day. We knew we could do it from the start. In the closing laps my partner did a great job keeping us in the lead. But this is not the finish yet, because we want new victories!”
